A Desire to Look Absolutely Fabulous!

Many times a client will come to me requesting a certain look or a certain hair color. For whatever reason that particular look or color has inspired them so much that they want to recreate that look on themselves. I remember getting so irritated when someone would bring me a picture of someone else’s work so that they could have me duplicate it. Over the years I realized that its not just the color or style that inspired the client. It is the attitude of the person wearing the look that inspires the person who wants the style.

I’ve learned that although the hairstyle may look fascinating and the hair color could be a platinum blonde confection that stimulates the eyes; it's not the hair style that the client wants. It is the way the hair style or hair color makes the client feel that the client is desiring. The client feels that with this eye striking color or dope cut she will feel more attractive, confident, alluring, or whatever the attitude is that she’s seeing exude from the style. It is important to understand this because once you understand why the client wants a particular color or style, then you can help guide he or she in the direction towards the feeling they are seeking. Even if it is a totally different color or shape than the one they first thought they wanted.

In most cases, what the client wants is the style that will make them feel how they are seeking to feel. However, in some cases it can be helpful to suggest other options if the one desired will compromised the integrity of the hair too much.
I am always trying to dig a little deeper with my clients. I feel that it is that extra effort that will really set you apart or give you a great reputation for producing impressive work. Clients appreciate a stylist that is considerate, professional, and concerned with the overall health of their hair.

It shows that you as a stylist have integrity and that you are very knowledgeable about your craft which in turn builds trust with you and the client. Trust is the most important thing you need to have with a client to ensure that you both have a great experience when you see each other again.
