Finding the Right Look Still Might Take Some Time

One thing that I feel we might not pay much attention to when working with the real hair is that finding the right look for a person may not happen upon the first visit. Of course clients always put on pressure to look just the way they imagine in their heads when they leave the salon. The pressure of having to deliver a flawless style upon the first visit can have a major effect on the outcome of any new style and to release some of the pressure we must first release some of the expectations.

When a new client comes to me to get their hair done, they bring images of what they want to look like. Usually those images are inspired by pictures that they have seen on social media. They also reference other work that I’ve done on previous clients or people they have seen in passing. The first step when I have a consultation with a new client is to see assess the current condition of their hair. I also take the time to determine and explain if what they are requesting is can be achieved at that time.

For example, a new client may want to go short but keep a lot of length on the top. We may decide to do a particular haircut, but later on when the client has a chance to live in the cut for a while they realize that the length on the top is unmanageable for them. After the third day, it no longer fits into their lifestyle. When this particular client returns, I then receive their feedback about their concerns and then I make suggestions on some alternatives that may be of help to them. One option might be to go shorter on the top. This is where most clients have a tough time when they first cut their hair.

I always tell the client that it is better to imagine how you will feel with your new look verses imagining what you think it will look like. Of course you will have to imagine the silhouette and hair color, but I find that it is easier and it avoids unnecessary anxiety about the outcome. Imagine more of how you will feel which should be excitement, satisfaction, and happiness with your new look. As a man thinketh so is he is a great saying that definitely applies here. Imagine a good outcome and you shall receive a good outcome. If imagining how you will look creates anxiety and worry about the outcome then imagine feeling good about your hair and how pleased you will feel despite not being able to see how it looks yet
It is possible to try a few different shapes before settling into one that finally works for you. It’s often overlooked, but it can definitely take a few visits to get the style just right and perfected how the client likes it.
